PARC Aspen's Guide to Fall: The Best Things to Do in Aspen This Autumn
Fall in Aspen. That phrase alone says it all.
There is something about autumn in the Rocky Mountains that makes us want to pack a bag and head for higher elevation: crisp mountain air, golden Aspen groves, cool evenings, uncrowded trails and an entire town settling into the slower rhythm of the season.
While we may all come from beautiful places, we are admittedly biased when we say that fall in Aspen, Colorado, is nearly impossible to beat.
If you're planning a Colorado fall getaway or wondering what to do in Aspen this September, consider this your locally inspired starting point. Think of autumn in Aspen as our real-world version of Stars Hollow, for our fellow Gilmore Girls devotees, only tucked into the Rocky Mountains at 7,908 feet.
HERE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO IN ASPEN IN THE FALL.
1. Hike American Lake Among the Fall Colors
For travelers ready to earn their views, American Lake Trail is one of our favorite fall hikes near Aspen.
Located up Castle Creek Road near historic Ashcroft, the approximately 6.4-mile round-trip trail climbs through beautiful grooves of changing Aspens before winding through an evergreen forest and alpine meadows toward American Lake. The trail gains nearly 2,000 feet in elevation, so plan for a challenging half-day adventure rather than a casual morning stroll.
A few local tips: Pack plenty of water, layers, sunscreen and trail snacks, and start earlier in the day. Grab a sandwich or wrap from one of Aspen's favorite grab-and-go spots like Grateful Deli, Big Wrap, Silver's Aspen or The Butcher's Block.
And, of course, leave enough time to stop at Ashcroft Ghost Town while you're in the valley.
2. Spend Saturday Morning at the Aspen Farmers Market.
The Aspen Saturday Market has been a local tradition since the 90s, bringing Colorado-grown produce, artisan goods, baked goods, meats, jams, artwork and more to the heart of town. When the fall season knocks on our doorstep, the market becomes even more spectacular. The fresh morning air mixed with the smell of local vendors serving pastries, coffee, kettle corn, and fire roasted peppers makes this one of our favorite fall activities in downtown Aspen
The market runs every Saturday morning starting at 9:00 AM through October 3, 2026.
3. Picnic at John Denver Sanctuary.
For a quieter afternoon, head toward the John Denver Sanctuary, tucked beside the Rio Grande trail just a short walk from downtown Aspen.
Wander through the Song Garden, where lyrics from the legendary musician are etched into native river boulders, then find a place to sit, picnic and enjoy the sound of the Roaring Fork River nearby.
It's peaceful, distinctly Aspen, and perhaps the easiest place in town to slip into a Rocky Mountain High state of mind.
4. Catch the 58th Annual Aspen Ruggerfest.
Fall in Aspen isn't only about leaf peeping. If you're visiting September 17–20, 2026, you'll arrive just in time for the 58th Annual Aspen Ruggerfest, one of the town's longest-running sporting traditions.
More than 30 rugby teams descend on Aspen for four days of competition, with matches taking place at Rio Grande Park and Wagner Park in the heart of town.
Grab a coffee, find a spot near the field and cheer on the Aspen Gents alongside locals and rugby fans who return to town year after year.
PARC Aspen is a proud sponsor of this year’s Aspen Gents and Ruggerfest 2026.
5. Attend the Inaugural Aspen Restaurant Week Autumn.
If there were ever a year to plan a food-focused fall trip to Aspen, this might be it.
From September 21–27, 2026, the Aspen Chamber Resort Association (ACRA) and the local restaurant community will host the inaugural Aspen Restaurant Week Autumn.
Participating Aspen restaurants will offer specially priced, multi-course prix fixe menus designed to celebrate the flavors of fall and give locals and visitors an opportunity to revisit old favorites or discover somewhere new.
At PARC Aspen, guests can choose between two three-course Restaurant Week experiences.
In the Bar | $45++ per person
A three-course menu featuring guest favorites including our Summer Bowl, 620 Steak Frites, Mushroom & Polenta, and more!
In the Dining Room | $75++ per person
A three-course seasonal dining experience highlighting locally inspired ingredients and some new dishes including Chef Stefano’s Lomo Saltado.
For us, Aspen Restaurant Week is about more than a special menu. It's an opportunity to celebrate the people, purveyors, restaurants and ingredients that make dining in the Roaring Fork Valley. so special.
